Install Chrome OS on any Laptop with Play Store

Google recently released Chrome OS which is an operating system optimized for the internet. The best part about it, though, is that you can install the Play Store on any laptop with it! That means if your old Windows or Mac computer doesn’t have enough storage anymore, you’re not out of luck–you still have a way to use all your favorite apps and games.

The “chromium os download” is a free and open source operating system that runs on the Chrome browser. It allows users to install it on any laptop with Play Store.

Are you the person on your system that utilizes Google Browser the most? If that’s the case, why not utilize Chrome OS to surf the web and conduct your online job, complete with Google Play Store support?

Windows 10 comes with a lot of functions, but most people don’t utilize them. So, why are we running such a large operating system on our machine? Chrome OS is the best option for using the essential functionalities.

The greatest news is that you will continue to get updates straight from Google, and you will be able to download your favorite applications from the Google Play Store.

In this post, we’ll go through each and every step required in installing Chrome OS on any laptop or desktop using simple instructions.

What is Chrome OS, exactly?

“Chrome OS is a Gentoo Linux–based operating system built by Google,” according to Wikipedia. It is based on the open-source Chromium OS operating system and utilizes the Google Chrome web browser as its primary user interface. Chrome OS, on the other hand, is a closed-source operating system.”

Chrome OS features

  • The system is entirely cloud/web-based.
  • It also works on low-end systems.
  • Chrome OS is, and will continue to be, an open source and free operating system.
  • Perfectly supports Google Assistant.
  • You may create as many virtual workplaces as you like.
  • Up to current with the most recent OS versions
  • For added protection, use both a PIN and a password.
  • Both night and reading modes are available.
  • Chrome OS has access to all of Chrome’s features.

Chrome OS may be installed on any laptop or desktop computer.

Pre-requisites

  • A USB flash drive with a capacity of at least 16 GB is required.
  • A computer with an Intel-based processor
  • UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface)-enabled motherboard
  • Internet-connected computer system

Step 1: Get the Installation Media Ready

  • Insert a flash drive with a minimum capacity of 16 GB.
  • Now launch Rufus to generate bootable disk for Linux Mint.
  • Make sure that all of the default settings are left alone.
  • Now press the Start button and wait for the process to complete.
  • Rufus will want you to restart your computer when you’ve finished, but don’t do so; we still have a few steps to go.

Now that we’ve made the bootable disk, it’s time to put all of the Chrome OS files in one location.

  • To begin, open the Brunch (.tar.gz) file with any program such as WinRAR and extract it to a secure location where we may use it in the next phases. chromos-install.sh, efi legacy, efi secure, and rootc are the four files.
  • Now open the Chrome OS (.zip) file and save it to a secure location. Rename the file to rammus recovery.bin after that (make sure to rename).
  • Finally, transfer the four files from the brunch folder (chromos-install.sh, efi legacy, efi secure, and rootc), the Chrome OS recovery file (rammus recovery.bin), and the install.sh file to a new folder on the same flash drive (maybe titled Chrome OS).
  • Congratulations, you’ve completed step 1; now go on to step 2.

Step 2: Installing and Booting Linux Mint

Now it’s time to start the installation procedure by live booting into Linux Mint.

First, we’ll need to access the BIOS on the laptop to double-check the boot method; to do so, carefully follow the procedures below.

  • Restart your computer, and before the Windows logo appears, press the BIOS key to access it.
Brand BIOS Key Assigned
Acer Delete or F2
Asus Delete or F2 or F9
Dell Delete or F2
HP F10, F1, Esc
Lenovo F1, F2
Other F1-F12 or Esc
  • Navigate to the Boot area as soon as you enter the BIOS.

  • Then deactivate Secure Boot and switch to UEFI mode as the boot option.

  • Now you may save and exit BIOS by plugging in the flash disk.
  • Press the Boot Menu key once more while the computer is loading up.

Asus Esc or F8
Dell F12
HP Esc or F9
Lenovo F12, F8, F10, F12, F8, F10, F12, F12

  • You’ll see a list of drives on the screen; choose the one you inserted/plugged in and press Enter.
  • It will now take you to a Linux Mint boot menu, from which you may choose Start Linux Mint 19.3 Cinnamon 64-bit.

  • Finally, the Linux Mint demo environment will be launched.

Installation of Chrome OS (Step 3)

After you’ve completed all of the difficult stages, we’ll simply utilize the Linux Mint terminal to install Chrome OS. To do so, follow the instructions below.

  • First and foremost, make sure your Wi-Fi is up and running, since we’ll need it to install a few dependencies throughout the Chrome OS installation.
  • To do so, go to the right-bottom corner of your Linux Mint desktop and press the Wi-Fi icon.
  • Now open file manager and go to File System, where you may look for the folder we created and transferred to the flash/pen drive earlier.

1632873276_703_Install-Chrome-OS-on-any-Laptop-with-Play-Store

  • Open that folder and double-check all six files (chromos-install.sh, efi legacy, efi secure, rootc, rammus recovery.bin, and install.sh).
  • After you’ve double-checked all of the files, right-click anywhere in the empty area and choose Open in Terminal from the menu.
  • To begin the installation, open the terminal and type the following command.

install.sh sudo sh

  • It will ask for your permission to erase the hard disk after a time. To continue, type Yes and press Enter.
  • The installation will be done in a few minutes, depending on your internet connection.
  • Finally, enter the Linux Mint start menu from the bottom-left corner and choose the “Turn off” option.

  • Finally, turn on your computer and remove the flash/pen drive; it will now boot into the Chrome OS start screen.

Note that we are not allowed to run Chrome OS on any device other than a Chromebook, thus we are legally breaking Google’s terms and conditions. Although there is no danger in using your main Google account, we recommend that you do not do so.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Will I receive OTA updates or not?

Yes, you will get frequent updates as soon as Google sends them to your devices.

  • Is it better for me to use my personal Google account or not?

Yes, you may use it, but since we are technically breaking Google’s terms of service, we recommend that you do not use your main Google account.

  • Is it compatible with my AMD system?

Chrome OS will not run on any AMD-based computer.

  • What should I do now that Linux Mint isn’t detecting my hard drive?

If your hard drive isn’t recognized by Linux Mint, modify the install.sh file and replace the drive name from /dev/sda to your actual drive name, which you can find by doing sudo fdisk -l.

  • “Syntax error near unexpected token ‘$’r’ “, “syntax error near unexpected token ‘$’r’ “, “syntax error near unexpected token ‘$’r’ “, “syntax error near unexpected token ‘$’r’ “, “

Windows carriage returns are present in the file. To get rid of them, use the following command: chromeos-install.sh sed -i’s/r/g’

The Final Word

We hope you were able to follow our instructions and successfully install Chrome OS on your laptop or desktop, and that you are currently enjoying it. If you have any questions or are having trouble with any of the steps, please leave a comment below.

Peace 😉
