How to Get Rid of Screenshots on Your MacBook or iMac with Ease

Daniel Myers 3 min read

If you’ve ever taken a screenshot on your MacBook or iMac, you know that they’re automatically saved as .png files to your desktop. While this can be handy in some situations, it can also be annoying if you don’t want those screenshots taking up space on your desktop.

How to delete screenshots on mac

Luckily, there’s an easy way to get rid of those screenshots (or any other .png files) from your desktop with just a few clicks. Here’s how:

  1. First, open up a Finder window and head to your desktop. Then, click on the “View” option in the menu bar and select “As List”.
  2. Next, click on the “File” option in the menu bar and select “New Smart Folder”.
  3. In the “Save” dialog that appears, make sure the “Kind” drop-down is set to “Other…”, then type “.png” into the search box and hit “Return”.
  4. Finally, click on the “Save” button. This will create a new smart folder on your desktop that will automatically collect all .png files from your computer, including those pesky screenshots.

To get rid of the screenshots (or any other .png files), simply select them all and hit the delete key. They’ll be moved to the trash and you can empty it whenever you want.

Where screenshots are saved on a MacBook or iMac

By default, screenshots are saved to the desktop on a MacBook or iMac. However, you can change this behavior if you want. To do so, open up the “Screenshot” app from your “Applications” folder. Then, click on the “Options” button in the toolbar and select a new location for saving screenshots from the “Save To” drop-down.

You can also change the file format and choose to include the cursor in your screenshots from this menu. If you ever want to revert back to the default behavior, simply reset the options in the Screenshot app. And that’s all there is to it! With just a few clicks, you can get rid of those pesky screenshots taking up space on your desktop.

Alternatives to taking and deleting screenshots on a MacBook or iMac

If you don’t want to deal with screenshots at all, there are a few alternative solutions. For example, you can use the “Grab” app that comes with every Mac. This app allows you to take screenshots and save them directly to a file, without having to worry about them being saved to the desktop first.

You can also use a third-party app like Snagit or Skitch. These apps offer more features and options for taking and managing screenshots. However, they’re not free like the built-in Screenshot app.

No matter what method you use to take screenshots, remember that you can always change the location where they’re saved. This way, you can keep your desktop clean and clutter-free. Do you have any tips for dealing with screenshots on a Mac.

How to hide screenshots on a Mac

If you don’t want to delete your screenshots but don’t want them cluttering up your desktop, you can hide them instead. To do this, open up a Finder window and head to your “Pictures” folder. Then, click on the “View” option in the menu bar and select “As List”. Next, click on the “File” option in the menu bar and select “New Smart Folder”. In the “Save” dialog that appears, make sure the “Kind” drop-down is set to “Other…”, then type “.png” into the search box and hit “Return”. Finally, click on the “Save” button. This will create a new smart folder in your “Pictures” folder that will automatically collect all .png files, including screenshots. To hide the screenshots (or any other .png files), simply select them all and hit the delete key. They’ll be moved to the trash but won’t be deleted until you empty it.
